Available January 17, 2019: Sean Collins’ Planchette
This limited edition chapbook is comprised of 11 poems written with the use of predictive text. Author Sean Collins explains, “Using the predictive text on my cellphone's messaging app, I wrote these poems on the 11th anniversary of my father's death. I typed a word, the phone offered three options for the next word, I chose one, and so on. The writing constraint is instructive about our relationship, formalizing the somewhat circumscribed way of communicating that marked a lot of our conversations. That is, we often tended to express both more and less than we tried to.”
An antagonistic collaboration between poet and technology, the resulting poems are at times humorous and warm, and at others startling and awkward. Phrases repeat, creating a refrain of sorts. The predictive text recommends a new phone, says I love you, and lets you know, “I’m not sure if the / world is a good one.”
